From Farm to Bottle: The Story Behind Our Castor Oil
Most castor oil tells you very little about where it comes from. Ours has a story we're proud to share, from the farmers who grow it to the moment it's poured into amber glass.
At Grasses of Life, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin. So here's the whole journey.

Where It Began: A Search for the Cleanest Castor Oil
Our castor oil comes from India's pioneering organic castor producer. Their research began in 2005, and in 2007 they became the first to produce certified organic castor oil commercially.
The project was born from a European initiative to create the cleanest organic castor oil possible, one that met strict EU standards for premium natural cosmetics. Nearly two decades later, the same source is trusted by some of the world's leading cosmetic houses.
We're proud to bring that same oil to you, bottled under the Grasses of Life name.

We've Been There Ourselves
We don't just take our producer's word for it. Our founder, a qualified naturopath, travelled to India to see the whole process first-hand: walking the castor fields in Kutch, meeting the farmers, watching the seed being hand-cleaned and bagged, and touring the factory where it's pressed.
That visit is why we can tell you this story with confidence. Everything on this page is something we've seen with our own eyes.

The Land: Kutch, India
Our castor seed is grown in Kutch, in the state of Gujarat, India: a dry, sun-drenched region where castor has been cultivated for generations.
Every batch comes from the same farms and the same facility. That makes our castor oil truly single origin, so you get the same consistent quality, bottle after bottle.

The People: 700 Fair Trade Farmers
Our oil is grown by a cooperative of around 700 contracted farmers. Through the Fair for Life fair trade program, these farmers:
- Are paid above market rates for their seed
- Have their human rights and fair working conditions protected
- See a share of income returned to their local community
When you choose our castor oil, you're supporting the families who grow it.

Hand-Cleaned, Seed-Only
Here's a detail that sets our oil apart. At harvest, each farmer cleans their seed by hand.
Many manufacturers crush the whole seed, including the hull and shell. Ours goes into the press as 100% clean seed, and nothing else.

Every Bag Traceable
Organic should mean something you can verify. Every bag of seed is tagged so it can be traced back to the farm it came from and the date it was harvested. This is cross-checked against organic certification records, so the organic status of every batch is accounted for.

A Gentler Cold Press
Many castor oils are pressed from preheated seed to squeeze out more oil. Ours isn't.
Our producer developed their own low-temperature cold press through years of trial and error. It keeps the oil at around room temperature throughout pressing, so the oil is treated gently from seed to bottle.
The facility presses organic seed only, so there's no risk of cross-contamination with conventional seed.
And of course, our oil is hexane free, with no chemical solvents used.

Tested, Certified, Trusted
We don't just tell you our oil is clean. We test it.
- Heavy metal tested (each batch)
- Pesticide residue tested (each batch)
- Southern Cross Certified organic (Australia)
- Fair for Life certified fair trade
- Produced in an ISO 9001 and HACCP certified facility
- Food-grade certified

Bottled in Amber Glass
Finally, our castor oil is bottled in amber glass to help protect it from light, never plastic.

From Kutch to the Sunshine Coast
Grasses of Life is a Sunshine Coast, Queensland business, founded by a qualified naturopath. We chose this castor oil because we couldn't find a cleaner, more honest one anywhere. We've walked those farms ourselves.
This is single-origin, fair trade, hand-cleaned, gently cold-pressed organic castor oil, with a story you can trace all the way back to the farm.
